My first foray into HDTV was based upon favorable reviews of this product by Consumer Reports in the Dec. 2008 issue. Author explained 720p was more than adequate for a set less than 50 inches. I would agree. Phenomenal, bright picture and set-up is a breeze. Using a rabbit ears in Chicago and picture is excellent. Price via amazon was reasonable.
Purchased the set in 2008-05 and its been great TV! Out of the box the brightness and contrast were a bit overkill as blacks were grey but everything worked fine with a few minor tweaks. Dollar per dollar the set displays colors equally or better than more expensive sets so I'm real happy with the purchase. If only it were bigger!
If you watch 4:3 programs often a 37" is about as small as I'd ever go and the REGZA series offers plenty of I/O ports so there's no problem with connectivity (4 HDMI, S-vid, component, optical, and RCAs). If you run surround sound through an external decoder turn off the processing in the TV to prevent lip sync lag. I used the Optical output for decoding broadcast programs and it works like a champ as I knew the on-board speakers would have limitation due to there small size but that was expected.
Pros: Reliable, looks good, easy to use, great color, no dead pixels, easy setup and install. Color looks awesome and can be tweaked to your desire for any input and it retains those settings. I wanted a PDF manual after having the TV for a month and emailed Toshiba my request. They promptly sent the PDF manual to me.
Cons: on screen menu lingers too long and its not transparent, volume control is slow to change levels, the decoder/tuner detects the program channel name but doesn't display the program title being played (even my older Sony CRT did this function w/out a cable box) though Comcast. Speakers ok for broadcast but you'll miss the bass sound for movies ect.
Unrelated: I purchased a Toshiba Blu-Ray player (BDX-2500) and it sometimes does not turn on. This defect put me in contact with Toshiba's customer support which was very helpful, considerate, and willing to work with me either trying to resolve problem or return the product if I wasn't satisfied. I offered to do some trouble-shooting and said I call them back with the results. On the second phone call they offered to RMA the product after basic trouble shooting. That's 5 stars right there plus they're in the USA too! Keep that in mind people!
